A

TTThis and other letters of the alphabet occur as bearings in coats of armour, e.g. the family of Althorn bears gu on a fess arg, a Roman A.

Note: In ancient works, the letter A was often used in sketches of armorial bearings, where the metals in coat armour were not otherwise expressed, to denote argent: but as it was equally applicable to mark the colour azure, the letter B (for blue) was used for azure. To avoid confusion, a second letter was added, i.e., ar (now arg) and az making the difference between this metal and colour more obvious.
