Beacon, Bale-Fire, Cresset, Fire-Beacon

The beacon was used formerly to give warning of the approach of an enemy. It is depicted in various ways: a cattle crib having flames issuing therefrom on four legs or a large iron box to hold fire for alarm. It is also borne flamed raised on a pole, etc.
