Carbuncle, Charbocle, Escarbuncle
A charge purporting to represent the carbuncle which is a precious stone It takes the form of a cross of eight rays or staves, issuing from a central annulet, set with knobs and arms with fleur-de-lis at the ends. The ends are occasionally connected by cross-bars.Gibbon calls it carbunculus linearis, alluding to the lines or rays. It has also anciently appeared blazoned as an annulet staved flory.
