Catoose, Modilion

A cross catoosed

The catoose or scroll*, anciently written scrowle is, according to Berry,  a kind of bracket, carved in foliage or leaf. Because the extremities of the Cross Patonce bear a vague resemblance to the carving it was sometimes anciently termed catoosed.

*Not to be confused with the ribbon-like appendage on which the motto is inscribed. See scroll.
