Chevronel

Three chevronels

Another form of the chevron. Although half its breadth it is not considered a diminutive.

Heralds differ as to the number of chevrons that may be borne in one field, some contending that only one can be borne, and when exceeding that number, that they should then be termed chevronels. Some authorities contend that two chevrons may be borne in one shield but, since chevronels occupy one-fifth of the shield, the field might contain three or even four without joining. However the bearing of so many, with each preserving its proper dimension, would render the whole very much confused and is rarely if at all used.

Chevronels braced or interlaced, by some termed in fret as they pass over and under each other like the fret.
