A Cross fimbriated has the appearance of a cross surmounted of another or a cross having a border of metal to form a barrier between the charge and the field where both are tinctured in colours, and vice versa. This prevents the violation of the heraldic rule that "no metal can be placed on metal , or colour on colour." See Tincture. Where the border is interrupted by the sides of the shield, the term edged is used. The term voided is also used when the the tincture of the cross and the field are the same.
