Visconti Arms

The origin of this bearing is thus related: Otto, first viscount of Milan, going to the Holy Land with Godfrey of Bouillon, defeated and slew, in single combat, the great giant Votux, a man of extraordinary stature and strength, who had challenged the bravest of the Christian army. The viscount  took his armour and adopted the crest upon the helmet, being a serpent, swallowing an infant, for his arms. This he wore, either to strike terror into those who engaged him or because he boasted descent from Alexander the Great, who was considered the son of Jupiter Ammon, when metamorphosed into the shape of a serpent.
