Damasked, Diaper, Diapered,  Diapering

A system of surface decoration used by heralds to enhance the shield, formerly much used in arms painted on glass whereby the field was covered with little shapes filled with a variety of figures or took the form of a running ornament.  Diapering is thought to be have been inspired by the linen cloths of Ypres.

This is not a charge but an ornamental accessory using fanciful patterns which do not conform with  normal heraldic design.  See Diapered.
