Displayed

Said of any bird of prey but more particularly the eagle, when borne erect, with the legs stretched out and the wings expanded or extendant. Also termed elevated.

Some ancient authors also have it applicable to any beast laid open in full aspect, that is, when it stands up, and stretches out the fore-legs on each side the body, so that the full face, breast, belly and inner parts of the thighs are seen. However no arms with such a bearing appear to exist. The Old English term is splayed.

Displayed recursant or tergiant, the wings crossing one over the other, sometimes termed backwards displayed the wings crossed.

Displayed foreshortened. Eagles and other birds thus borne are depicted flying straight towards you, so as no part but the roundness of the head and body is seen, with the pinion of the wings extended, the long feathers thereof being also foreshortened, so that little of their length and breadth is perceptible. Displayed foreshortened in the train is a term used when hardly any of the body is discerned.
