To be adorned with an insignia or ornament, such as a crown, coronet, mitre or other emblems. The Earl Marshal, for instances, places two batons or tipped sable in saltire behind his shield. A bishop ensigns his arms with a mitre or a tasselled hat. See Insignia of Office

A staff is sometimes also said to be ensigned with a flag.
