Escutcheon
Escocheon, Scutcheon, Scocheon, Socheon

1. Escutcheon is the heraldic term for the shield, on which, under every variety of shape, arms are blazoned. The word is derived from the French écusson, a diminutive of écu, which in turn was taken from the Roman scutum. This word is sometimes used to describe the complete coat of arms. It originally represented the shield the knight used in battle, upon which his Arms were displayed. See Shield

2. A Subordinary,  when borne singly also termed inescutcheon, being a small shield borne within the shield upon the fess point. See Subordinary
