Falcon
Gu a falcon rampant elevated hooded perched collared belled jessed and varvelled
The falcon is very similar to an eagle but is shown with a smooth head, rather than tufted, and a closed beak. When represented as feeding, it is said to be at prey. It is generally represented in the close position and when borne with a bell attached by a leather thong (jesse) to either one or both legs and a hood, it is said to be belled, jessed and hooded. when thus blazoned, the jesses must fly loose. When the thongs end in rings (varvels), it is blazoned varvelled. The lure was a bunch of feathers by which the bird was taught to return.
Gerfalcon, Peregrine and tiercelet are other names for the falcon which, heraldically, is also indistinguishable from the hawk.
