Fess, Fesse
One of the ordinaries originally conceived as representing a waist belt or girdle. A strip or band placed horizontally across the shield, occupying one-third of the field. The fess, like other ordinaries, should be wider when charged than when borne plain. Its diminutives are the bar, the barrulet and the closet. The term fessy is never used.
