An ordinary having a part removed, broken, interrupted or parted asunder has been variously described by authors as fracted, ramped, severed, etc. over the centuries and all these terms are generally interchangeable according to the herald's fancy. See also Overlaid

Disjointed is more often applied to the chevron when separated at the joint.

Eclaté or esclatté is more specifically applied to a charge that appears shattered, or forcibly broken or shivered. The word esclatté implies broken irregularly, like a shield shattered with the stroke of a battle-axe by a heavy blow, and not cut as with a sword. See Eclaté
