Garter

1. A strap formed into a circle fastened with a buckle with a pendent end. Although the emblem of the Order of the Garter, it was in use before that order was created.

It is also divided, and termed a demi garter.

2. The bendlet has also been called a garter or gartier by Guillim who describes it thus in  A Display of Heraldrie : He beareth Or, a Gartier Gules. This is derived either from the French word Jartier, or else from the Norman word Gartier, both which are the same that we call in English a Garter, the forme whereof this Charge doth represent.
