Order of the Garter

This is the most illustrious order of British knighthood. It was instituted by Edward III in 1348 at Windsor where investitures are still held in the Chapel of St George. It consists of the sovereign and 25 companions, of whom the Prince of Wales is always one. In more recent times foreign princes have been admitted. The knights place the initials KG after their names, which takes precedence of all other titles except those of royalty.
