Man’s head, couped

  1. Heads, whether of men, beasts, birds, etc. are common bearings in heraldry, looking straight forward, in profile or full-faced termed also affronté and guardant; and looking backwards, called regardant. The position of the human head should be particularly named, although the term head, without any addition, implies in profile and if the colour of the hair is specified, it is blazoned crined of that colour.

Beasts, birds, etc. when borne looking forward, and only one aide of the head seen, require no particular notice of this position, which is always so implied when not stated to the contrary; but when the whole face is seen, it must then be termed guardant, and when looking backwards, regardant, to point out the particular position of the head.

2. A term in heraldry once applicable to flowers. See Bole
