Janus  

Janus's head erased at the neck

A Roman deity of great antiquity, the name in Latin signifying  door or opening and hence, beginnings and endings. He presided over the beginnings of every enterprise, when he he was invoked before others gods. His principal festival was on New Year's Day which explains why January, the first month of the year, is named after him to this day.
