Mantling

1. In an Achievement, the lambrequin, which was a piece of cloth attached to the helmet and often torn into strands in combat, in which form, albeit stylised, it is depicted. Mantling should distinguished from the mantle or cloak behind the  shield which serves as a backdrop to the entire Arms.

There are rules governing the tincture of mantling and its lining according to rank. The Sovereign uses mantling of gold lined with ermine, whilst peers, and certain great Officers of State, use crimson lined with ermine. All others use the principal colour of the arms lined with the principal metal.
