A corruption of the Latin mundus, the world, a particular name given to a ball or globe, which forms part of the regalia of an emperor or a king and is the sign of sovereign authority and majesty. This ball or globe is encircled with a horizontal band, enriched with diamonds and precious stones; from the upper edge whereof springs a semicircular band, enriched in like manner; and having on its top a Cross Paté.
