Orle

A subordinary being a diminutive of the bordure but detached from the outer side of the shield. It is composed of a line of double thickness replicating the shape of the shield but about a fifth part from its edge. It has the appearance of a shield with a bordure placed on a larger shield similar to an escutcheon voided, which was the term used by early heralds for the orle.  The edges of the orle may be engrailed, indented, invecked, fleury, &c.
