Quartered

1. A shield is quartered when two or more coats of arms are marshalled to form one bearing. See Quartering

 2. The partition or division of a cross, or any other ordinary, into quarter tinctures. See also Cross Counter-crossed

 

3. The term will sometimes be encountered to depict a cross voided in the centre but is better blazoned  a cross quarterly pierced.  This charge has at times been variously blazoned a cross parted, a division of the field into nine equal parts formed in three rows, chequy of nine, five points squared orderly into four, a cross charged in the middle, or heart, with a point, and even four points made equal.
