Scroll
Escrol

The ribbon-like appendage, on which the motto is inscribed, attached to a Crest or Escutcheon.   It was originally a long slip of parchment, paper, pasteboard, etc. whereon crests were placed. It was not till long after the reign of Henry V that any person, beneath the degree of a knight, could place his crest upon a wreath.  A catoose was sometimes termed a scroll.
