A subordinary being a diminutive of the orle, and half its width. Generally borne double, it follows the shape of the shield. By some early writers termed tract or traile.
When charged with fleurs-de-lis counter-fleury, that is, alternating in such a way, that the top of the first fleur-de-lis appears on one edge and the bottom of the same directly opposite on the other edge, whilst the second fleur-de-lis is reversed, and so on alternately, it is blazoned double tressure counter-fleury. This form of tressure appears on the Royal Arms of Scotland when it is blazoned double tressure fleury counter-fleury.
Fleury counter-fleury is also depicted charged with fleurs-de-lis, in a way that the outer orle is shows with the top half of each fleurs-de-lis, which then appear on the inner orle but pointing inward.
