1. To sketch arms in outline with pen and ink, and with the tinctures written in.
Note.—In ancient works, the letter A was often used in sketches of armorial bearings, where the metals in coat armour were not otherwise expressed, to denote argent: but as it was equally applicable to mark the colour azure, the letter B (for blue) was used for azure. To avoid confusion, a second letter was added, i.e., ar (now arg) and az making the difference between this metal and colour more obvious.
