A staff of authority. The truncheon, as such called the Marshal's Staff, is the official badge of the Earl Marshal being a golden rod, tipped with black enamel, having the arms of the Sovereign at one end and those of the Earl at the other. As an ensign of office, two of them, placed saltireways, behind the shield, is borne by the Dukes of Norfolk as hereditary Earl Marshals of England. Truncheons are also often part of crests, e.g. an arm vested in pale grasping a truncheon
