Abbots' Staff, Bishop's Staff, Episcopal Staff, Pastoral Staff

A crozier between two palmer's staves

A staff of gold, metal, wood or ivory with a curved head or crook, being part of the insignia of a bishop or abbot. The bishop’s crook is always borne outward whereas the abbot’s is turned inward to indicate the limitation of his power to a monastery rather than the wider diocese, which is within the bishop’s jurisdiction. The term staff-croysee is found in the works of old authors.
